Gnathostoma infective stage larvae in swamp eels (Fluta alba) at a metropolitan market in Bangkok, Thailand.

چکیده
A total of 1,788 livers from swamp eels (Fluta alba), purchased at a market in Bangkok, Thailand, from April to July 2002, were studied for the prevalence and intensity of Gnasthostoma third stage larvae (L3s). Of all livers, 466 were infected with Gnasthostoma L3s (infection rate = 26%). The larvae recovered averaged 0.43 +/- 0.51 larvae/liver. All larvae were identified as Gnasthostoma spinigerm by morphological criteria. The prevalence of G. spinigerum L3s in the eels was much higher in the rainy season (June and July, 74%) than during April and May (8%). Therefore, prevention programs for gnathostomiasis should be emphasized during the rainy season.

Contamination Of The Gnathostoma Spp Infective Stage Larvae In Fluta Alba Sold In Bangkok
In Thailand Gnathostoma spinigerum is the major causative agent of human gnathostomiasis. Usually, humans acquire the infection by consumption of G. spinigerum L3s infected hosts as partially cooked or uncooked food. Of several uncooked food, the highest prevalence of G. spinigerum L3s was found in Fluta alba (swamp eels). In Thailand, data of the prevalence and concentration of the parasite in...
متن کاملPositivity and Intensity of Gnathostoma spinigerum Infective Larvae in Farmed and Wild-Caught Swamp Eels in Thailand
From July 2008 to June 2009, livers of the swamp eels (Monopterus alba) were investigated for advanced third-stage larvae (AL3) of Gnathostoma spinigerum. Results revealed that 10.2% (106/1,037) and 20.4% (78/383) of farmed eels from Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province and those of wild-caught eels obtained from a market in Min Buri District of Bangkok, Thailand were infected, respectively...
متن کاملFeasibility Of Using Orange Juice For Digestion Of Swamp Eel Viscera For Harvesting Infective Stage Larva Of Gnathostoma Spp
Gnathostoma spinigerum third stage larvae antigen is necessary for Western blot analysis in the diagnosis of Gnathostomiasis. Acid pepsin solution is required for digestion of eel's liver( Fluta alba ) to yield the larvae for antigen preparation. Here, he reported the feasibility of using orange juice as an alternative to enzyme pepsin in harvesting Gnathostoma spinigerum third stage larvae. Fr...
متن کاملGnathostomiasis in Thailand: a survey on intermediate hosts of Gnathostoma spp. with special reference to a new type of larvae found in Fluta alba.
To clarify current status of gnathostomiasis in Thailand, a survey on intermediate hosts has been carried out at various localities since 1987. It was found that Fluta alba (Fresh water eel) as well as Channa striata (snake-headed fish) might be important in playing a role of transmitting the infection either among humans or reservoir animals. During the three years from 1987 to 1989, larvae of...
متن کاملPrevalence and intensity of third stage Gnathostoma spinigerum larvae in swamp eels sold in three large markets in Bangkok, Thailand.
Gnathostoma spinigerum is a common human tissue parasite in Thailand. The swamp eel is the major intermediate or paratenic host for this parasite. The high prevalence of the infective third stage larvae (L3) of this parasite in the rainy season has been noted in previous studies. During June 1999 (rainy season), we performed a cross-sectional survey of the prevalence and the intensity of G. spi...
